Alaska / The Yukon

Overview & Highlights

Explore dramatic northern wilderness filled with wildlife on an epic fly-drive adventure across the Yukon and Alaska.

Traversing Canada and the USA, this journey begins in the Yukon capital Whitehorse. Take a ride on a historic paddle steamer before visiting beautiful Emerald Lake and the world’s smallest desert in Carcross.

Then head north-west to explore incredible Kluane National Park where ancient glaciers, lakes and boreal forests are overlooked by 17 of Canada’s highest peaks including Mount Logan. Take an unforgettable flightseeing tour over the park for breathtaking views then explore on hikes and kayaking trips.

Journey along the Alaska Highway to cross the border to Tok and enjoy some sledding in the Dog Mushing Capital of Alaska. Then head south through the Chugach Mountains to beautiful Valdez on Prince William Sound, famous for its glaciers, inlets and fjords. Take an unforgettable cruise to the huge Columbia Glacier and watch wildlife including porpoises, puffins, sea lions and otters.

Head north to Anchorage via idyllic Sheep Mountain Lodge, surrounded by hiking trails filled with birdlife and wildflowers. Explore Anchorage’s museums and hiking trails, then head north via Talkeetna to majestic Denali National Park.

A highlight of any trip to Alaska, Denali is home to bears and wolves and of course North America’s highest mountain. Explore the park by jeep or take a tundra wilderness tour. Alternatively, view Denali from above on a summit flightseeing tour or on a Denali glacier landing by helicopter.

Continue north to Fairbanks and a sternwheeler river cruise into the Alaskan Interior on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Then head south-east and cross back into Canada, taking in wonderful scenery on the famous Top of the World Highway to Dawson City. Explore the region’s mining heritage, then try panning for gold in Klondike rivers. Explore the Arctic tundra, alpine lakes and granite mountains of Tombstone Territorial Park, home to grizzlies, black bears, moose, caribou and wolves, then enjoy an evening excursion to the Top of the Midnight Dome for sweeping views.

Return to Whitehorse via Five Finger Rapids and a dip in Nordic Hot Springs as your adventure draws to a close.

This tour runs exclusively May to September when conditions are best, and from May to July you can experience the wonder of the Midnight Sun in Alaska and the Yukon.

Our expert's opinion

“Watching boulders of ice break off a glacier in Alaska is amazing, but chastening too as the evidence of climate change is apparent in this enchanting region.”
