Whitehorse
Known as the Wilderness City, the Yukon capital Whitehorse is famous for pure air, clear skies, First Nations culture and beautiful hiking trails.
Named after the rapids on the Yukon River, Whitehorse was founded by gold prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890's when 100,000 people tried to reach the nearby gold fields.
One of the city’s main attractions S.S. Klondike is one of only two surviving paddle steamers from the 1930's, when these ships were the main form of transport before the construction of roads. The Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre is the gathering place for First Nations culture with a long house, art gallery, studios and regular performances, while the MacBride Museum is the best place to explore the Yukon’s eventful history with some 40,000 objects.
Other city attractions include natural history at The Beringia Interpretive Centre, and the Yukon Transportation Museum next door is home to the world’s largest weather vane. Popular excursions near Whitehorse include Nordic Hot Springs, Yukon’s only thermal baths half an hour north-west of the city, and Long Ago People’s Place, an authentic recreation of a First Nations village, an hour to the west. There is also very good hiking, cycling, ice fishing, canoeing and kayaking near town.
