Tombstone Territorial Park
Explore wild terrain in search of bears and wolves beneath rugged peaks in the Yukon’s Tombstone Territorial Park.
This spectacular wilderness of Arctic tundra, alpine lakes, meadows and granite mountains covers some 2,000 square kilometres north-east from Dawson City along the gravel Dempster highway.
Once inhabited by woolly mammoths in prehistoric times, Tombstone Territorial Park is home to grizzlies, black bears, moose, caribou and wolves, offering great wildlife watching and hiking on trails along the North Klondike River.
The park’s rather ominous name originates from the pinnacles and slabs on the mountains that explorers thought resembled grave markers. Tombstone lies entirely within Tr’ondek Hwech’in territory with an interesting Interpretation Centre. Camping is available at three sites in the park but Tombstone is an easy day trip from Dawson City if you don’t want to camp.
