Southern Lakes
The Southern Lakes region of the Yukon has beautiful waterways, thriving First Nations communities, the world’s smallest desert and scenic hiking trails.
The Southern Lakes contains some of the most lush, accessible scenery in the Yukon. The largest town Carcross is in the traditional territory of the Carcross/Tagish First Nations on the shores of Bennett Lake with an impressive century-old bridge and colourful totem poles.
A few kilometres north of town is the tiny Carcross Desert, known as the smallest desert in the world at just 1.6 square km. This is commonly combined with a trip to Emerald Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in the region.
Nearby Tagish is where many of the original gold panners such as Skookum Jim hailed from, and is famous for its fishing, while Marsh Lake is well-known for its spring festival Celebration of the Swans, marking the birds’ migration.
