Kluane National Park
Half the size of Switzerland, the awe-inspiring Kluane National Park contains ancient glaciers, towering peaks and spectacular trails past shimmering lakes and boreal forests.
Situated in the southwest of the Yukon, this UNESCO World Heritage Site covers over 20,000 square kilometres, with 17 of Canada’s highest mountains including highest peak Mount Logan (5,959m), and the largest icefields in the world outside the polar regions.
The scale of Kluane National Park and the Saint Elias mountain peaks are best enjoyed from above on a flightseeing tour, and some tours include a glacier landing. The park has a wide variety of wildlife, including black bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall sheep.
On the ground, highlights include kayaking on Kathleen Lake, hiking one of the 15 trails such as King’s Throne Trail, and rafting on the Alsek River. The Visitor Information Centre in Haines Junction is a good place to learn about the traditions of the local Champagne and Aishihik First Nations people through interactive displays and presentations.
