Washington DC

Situated on the banks of the Potomac River, Washington DC is a compact city or district – ‘District of Columbia’ as it is formally called – bordering two of the USA’s original 13 states, Maryland and Virginia. A place that in a way needs little introduction, it is world famous for being the capital of the United States and home to the iconic White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the towering obelisk of the Washington Monument along the National Mall. Defined by its imposing and impressive neoclassical architecture, few would fail to recognise its many memorials, monuments and buildings, which are as spectacular during the day as they are seen at night.

Aside from governmental institutions, Washington DC is also home to the world-renowned Smithsonian Museums and Galleries – of which there are 19 in total – including the National Air & Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Gallery of Art. Read the original US Constitution, peruse internationally-acclaimed art, witness some of the world’s best dinosaur fossils and see Dorothy’s ruby red slippers from the Wizard of Oz – all attractions are free to visitors and the public.

Elsewhere in the city, there’s plenty to explore with diverse neighbourhoods offering up everything from culinary delights – the city has a noteworthy international food scene – to chic shops, eclectic bars and striking architecture wherever you look. Stroll the charming neighbourhood of Georgetown in the northwest of the city, enjoy the special nightlife found in Adams Morgan, listen to the sweet sounds of Jazz along U Street, and if you’re visiting in spring, admire the cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin.
