Washington DC and Capital Region
Stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, and bordering America’s capital across the Potomac River, Virginia is one of the 13 original colonies and is widely considered the state that was the ‘birthplace of the nation’. A visit to Virginia offers fascinating insight into America’s early history, as well as an opportunity to spend time in the state’s beautiful natural wonders and discover the enticing local city life.
You’ll start your trip in the Napa Valley of the East Coast, Loudoun County. Filled with vine-covered hills, scenic vistas, charming towns and rich heritage, you’ll get to spend your first two days wine tasting throughout this unique region and making the most of the idyllic scenery. Next, you’ll head to the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. Home to over 200,000 acres of protected lands, it’s an incredible place for hiking, kayaking, listening to songbirds and watching the star-filled night sky – not to mention witnessing one of the world’s largest underground stalactite caverns. You’ll then head to Charlottesville, a stunning historical stop in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, designed by one of America’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, before continuing to Williamsburg, America’s “Colonial Capital”, where you will gain insight into the nation’s early history and way of life. You’ll end your stay in the world-famous world capital, Washington DC, seeing the city’s many impressive monuments, memorials and museums before you leave.

Our expert's opinion
“Virginia has a piece of my heart – it’s a state I truly fell in love with! It has everything from the most incredible wine (who knew?) to the stunning landscapes of Shenandoah National Park – Luray Caverns is a real awe inspiring visit too! American Civil War history runs through the state, but in Williamsburg you get amazing insight in early American history. Top tip: don’t miss a stay in Virginia Beach. It’s so beautiful and there’s so much to do – I took an eco-tour kayaking with wild dolphins!”
