Washington DC and Capital Region
Holding the seat of America’s government, the Capital Region is full of cities, towns and places that have made their mark on the past and the present. From national monuments and world-class museums to spectacular national parks and blissful beaches, not to mention delightful dining and shopping, there’s so much to discover in this historic region of the United States. This journey will take you all around the highlights of the region traversing Virginia, Maryland and the capital itself, Washington DC.
You’ll start your trip on the Potomac River in one of America’s oldest cities, Alexandria. Founded in 1749 and boasting the USA’s third oldest historic district, you’ll find some of the nation’s most beautifully preserved 18th and 19th century architecture. Next, you’ll head inland for two nights in the beautiful Shenandoah National Park. Home to over 200,000 acres of protected lands, it’s an incredible place for hiking, kayaking, listening to songbirds and watching the star-filled night sky.
You’ll then head to Charlottesville, a stunning historical stop in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, designed by one of America’s founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, before continuing to Williamsburg, America’s “Colonial Capital”, where you will gain insight into the nation’s early history and way of life.
Then, you’ll visit the contemporary side of the Capital Region with two nights each in the vibrant coastal locales of Virginia Beach and Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Warm, clean waters, bustling boardwalks, beautiful natural areas and fresh seafood await. An overnight in Annapolis on the famed Chesapeake Bay is next before you end your stay in the world-famous world capital, Washington DC.
