Craters of the Moon
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to walk on the moon, you’ve come to the right place. Experience another world at Craters of the Moon National Monument.
Miles upon miles of black lava formations, craters and sagebrush fill a desolate landscape that, on first glance, is not of this world. The Holocene-aged basaltic lava fields that stretch as far as the eye can see mimic the land that is on the moon, and only upon spotting the lone path that takes you through the 618 square miles of the park do you realise you are still on Earth.
A 7-mile loop road provides scenic overlooks and access to trails and caves for exploration, but you’ll find that even more opportunities can be found in the park’s vast and weird wilderness. Many of the paths are well-suited to both beginners and families. Hike the 1.6 mile trail through the Indian Tunnel for a once-in-a-lifetime experience or visit the twisted branches in the Devil’s Garden. The scenery will fascinate and unsettle in equal measures.
Craters of the Moon is also a designated International Dark Sky Park, so make sure to stay overnight at the Lava Flow campground if you want to experience the star-filled night skies.
