San Juan Islands

Part of an archipelago of more than 170 named islands and rocks roughly 160 km northwest of Seattle, the San Juan Islands offer astounding natural beauty, a slower pace of life, delectable local dining and world-class outdoor activities. The four most populated and visited islands – that also happen to be easily accessed by ferry – are San Juan, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw. Each island has its own charm, and you’ll find something unique in each of them. The archipelago is also a designated wildlife refuge and has been an important habitat for endangered bird and marine life since 1960.

San Juan, the largest of the islands, has the historic and walkable hub of Friday Harbour which is dotted with restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. Lime Kiln Point State Park offers prime whale-watching, and other delights can be found around the island from lush forests and farmlands to pebble beaches and the rolling hills of the Pelindaba Lavender Farm.

Orcas Island, called “the emerald isle” by locals for its brilliant shades of green terrain and its shimmering blue waters, is home to the stunning Moran State Park and Mount Constitution, as well as a thriving local art scene. Hikers and art lovers will find plenty to engage in.

Laid-back and lush, Lopez Island is known for its friendly community and bikeable roads and encourages visitors to embrace a slower pace. Lap up the rolling pastoral views on a cycle or head to Lopez Village to browse the cafés, bookstores and shops.

The smallest of the populated islands, Shaw Island has limited amenities but still manages to offer an idyllic campground for those looking to find some peace in nature.
