The New Brunswick city of Saint John is an historic base to discover the incredible tides and geological wonders of the Bay of Fundy.
The astounding high tides of the Bay of Fundy and huge populations of whales that inhabit these waters can as easily be seen from Saint John in New Brunswick, as from Digby in Nova Scotia.
The historic city of Saint John (not to be confused with St John’s in Newfoundland) is a good base to explore the region with streets lined with restored Victorian architecture, a famous city market and some quality breweries that offer tours. You don’t even have to leave town to see the incredible power of the surrounding waters – the unique Reversing Falls Rapids can be viewed from Fallsview Park.
There’s a fascinating array of geological features to explore along the coastline of New Brunswick. The red sandstone St Martins Caves are best explored by kayak, while Fundy National Park has Acadian forest, beaches, waterfalls and trails for hiking and cycling.
Further east, Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park offers kayaking around its distinctive sea stacks, and you can walk on the ocean floor at low tide to take in the incredible contrasts.
