Lunenburg is Nova Scotia’s best-preserved colonial town with colourful buildings, an attractive harbour and some great restaurants serving local specialities.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the town is among the oldest in the Maritimes with buildings painted lobster-red, pink, blue and green, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Lunenburg is home to Bluenose II, a replica of the iconic vessel from a century ago, often docked in port and available for sailing excursions, while the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic has several other historic schooners and exhibitions on the rum-running history of the area.
You can eat very well in Lunenburg. Try the seafood chowder, Lunenburg sausage and Solomon Gundy (marinated herrings with sour cream), while connoisseurs of spirits can take a tour of the town’s Ironworks distillery.
The South Shore is home to the world-famous Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl festival in February, running from Barrington through Lunenburg to Peggy’s Cove.
