Itinerary

Day 1 From Halifax to Lunenburg via Peggy’s Cove

Arrive in Halifax and enjoy a few days at the start of your trip exploring this historic city. Visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic with its Titanic artefacts, then collect your motorhome from the Cruise Canada Halifax depot. Enjoy a gentle drive along the south shore with amazing ocean views, visit the charming coastal communities of Peggy’s Cove, Chester and Mahone Bay. Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse in Canada. If you have time, take a scenic boat tour to see nesting arctic puffins, seals, and whales. Stay overnight in the town of Lunenburg, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Day 2 Explore historic Lunenburg and Kejimkujik National Park

Explore historic Lunenburg’s colourful architecture. Take a short harbour cruise on the Bluenose racing schooner, and visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. By mid-afternoon continue along the south shore, then head inland to the verdant scenery of Kejimkujik National Park.

Days 3-4 Kejimkujik National Park and whale-watching in the Bay of Fundy

Spend the day enjoying Kejimkujik National Park – from canoeing to hiking and cycling. The park has abundant wildlife and North America’s largest collection of petroglyphs (rock carvings). By late afternoon continue your journey heading towards Digby. On your second day, head to Digby Neck to go whale-watching in the Bay of Fundy off Brier Island. In summer, the bay provides feeding and mating grounds for finback, humpback, minke and right whales.

Days 5-6 New Brunswick coast and Fundy National Park

This morning, take the bay ferry over to neighbouring province New Brunswick, making your way along the stunning Fundy Coast to the Fundy Trail Parkway. As you drive along the 11km coastal roadway, stop at the observation decks to catch sight of whales. Then explore the forests of Fundy National Park.

Days 7-8 The incredible tides of Hopewell Rocks and Kouchibouguac National Park

Today, you will visit Hopewell Rocks, The Ocean Tidal Exploration Site and home to the world’s highest tides. Here you can walk on the Bay of Fundy’s ocean floor at low tide before tides rise an incredible 15 metres. Check the tide schedule on the Hopewell Rocks website and schedule your visit to walk on the ocean floor or kayak around the rocks. Then arrive at Kouchibouguac (Koushe-boo-gwack) National Park, a diverse landscape of salt marshes, tidal rivers, sheltered lagoons, fields and forests. Other great options include a lobster cruise with Shediac Bay Cruises, or hire a bike and cycle some of the 60km of cycling paths.

Days 9-10 The coastline and lighthouses of Prince Edward Island

Today you cross over the incredible Confederation Bridge onto Prince Edward Island, home of Anne of Green Gables. If you have ever read the book, you will want to visit this magical setting, and consider visiting the Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish. Enjoy one of the coastal drives through beautiful scenery and spot some of the 50 lighthouses on the island.

Day 11 From Pictou to stunning Cape Breton Island

This morning, arrive by ferry into the town of Pictou, which is known as the birthplace of Nova Scotia. After lunch, drive north to Cape Breton Island, one of the most beautiful islands in the Americas, arriving at Lake Ainslie. Visit the Hector Heritage Center and step aboard a replica of the ship that brought the first Scottish settlers to Nova Scotia.

Days 12-13 Drive Cape Breton’s breathtaking Cabot Trail

Take a slight detour to the coastal town of Inverness, known for its warm ocean waters and Mermaids’ Tears, coloured sea glass that washes up along this coastline. Then head north to Margaree Harbour and join the famous Cabot Trail, a stunning driving trail that goes from sea level to 1,000 metres running along the Gulf of St Lawrence and the Atlantic. Spend some time beachcombing at Inverness, then enjoy a hike on one of the 26 trails within the national park.

Day 14 Return to Halifax along Nova Scotia’s eastern shore

It’s a long drive today and your last chance to enjoy the delights of the eastern shore of Nova Scotia including Martinique Beach before arriving at the Cruise Canada depot in Halifax at the KOA.

After spending the night at the Cruise Canada depot at the KOA, return your motorhome and take your flight home.
