Spearfish Canyon

Brimming with limestone cliffs, lush pine-filled hillsides, flowing mountain streams and fantastical waterfalls, you would not be mistaken for thinking Spearfish Canyon looks like it’s out of a postcard. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this deep, narrow gorge carved over millennia by the Spearfish Creek is often compared to the Grand Canyon and is a must for both outdoor and wildlife enthusiasts.

Drive the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway for 19 miles of breath-taking panoramas and stop at observation points to take in the spectacular multi-tiered Roughlock Falls waterfall and the 60-foot waterfall, Bridal Veil. Photographers will also find countless opportunities to take a great shot. Hike or bike through miles of pristine forests – and don’t be surprised when a mountain goat jumps across your path. Make sure to pack some binoculars for birdwatching and some sandwiches for a picnic – you’ll get to do both as you cross the many trails. There’s no better place in the region for fly-fishing, so cast a line in the multiple pools and rapids along Spearfish Creek. A picture-perfect sight to see, Spearfish Canyon is not to be missed.
