Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park FAQs

Find out all you need to know about visiting Glacier National Park.

When is the best time to visit Glacier National Park?

Glacier National Park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the summer season which runs from late May until September. Park conditions and accessible areas vary greatly by season, and it is only during these months that everything is open to the public. Daytime temperatures are pleasant and range from 20-27°C across the season. Naturally, these months are also the peak tourist season, so if you’re looking for fewer crowds, we would recommend visiting in October. Fall is a wonderful time to experience Glacier, as the trees will have turned beautiful colours, the temperatures will still be relatively mild, and the wildlife will be active meaning you’ll get a chance to see them as they prepare for hibernation. Winter is very cold and long, and generally absorbs any hope for early warmth or buds come spring. Most businesses and services in and near the park are closed from end October through to late May, so if you do intend to visit during that time you will have to plan ahead and be entirely self-sufficient.

What places combine well with Glacier National Park?

A visit to Glacier National Park can take a few days to see everything, but if you’re looking to extend your trip, cross into Canada and visit Glacier’s sister park, Waterton Lakes National Park. Great hiking, picturesque boat cruises and several scenic drives await. If you don’t mind a road trip and want to see another world-class national park, drive south for 6 hours to Yellowstone. It’s thermal wonders and unique wildlife are well worth a visit.
