Clothing & special equipment
Bring practical, comfortable clothing and a light-weight jumper or jacket. For the hiking, light and supportive walking boots with good grip are essential. Shorts and T-shirts are also a must when travelling in late spring, summer or early autumn, as are a sun hat and sunglasses. Protective clothing such as a fleece and/or waterproof outer shell are advisable at any time of the year, and if you plan on hiking throughout the duration of your trip then hiking poles are also an asset.
Please get in touch before departure if you have any doubts and we can advise appropriately.
Weather
From the high peaks of the Rockies to the flat grasslands of the prairies, the different elevations in this part of the United States play a huge factor in determining the weather, and the best time to visit. The whole region has a significant annual variation in temperature, much like its varying altitudes, and benefits from little rainfall. Summers are typically pleasantly warm – only occasionally hot – spring and autumn are mild, and winters are very cold. Up in the mountain ranges the weather can become an adventure in itself so the most stable months to visit are between June and September.
