Gaspé Peninsula
The Gaspé Peninsula in north-eastern Quebec boasts dramatic rocky shores peppered with lighthouses, home to an array of birds and whales.
The Gaspé Peninsula, jutting into the Gulf of St Lawrence in the north-east of Quebec, has wild coastal scenery and a mountainous forested interior.
Also known as the Gaspésie region, its most famous site is a huge monolith pierced with a hole, sculpted by the sea. The 88-metre-high Percé Rock can be viewed from a platform on a nearby headland or better still on a boat trip to Bonaventure.
This island has largest colony of northern gannets in the world – tens of thousands of birds nest on the cliffs between April and October, while seven species of whales inhabit the surrounding waters so a whale-watching tour is highly recommended.
Inland, some of the most spectacular landscapes in the region are in Gaspésie National Park with clusters of forested peaks in the Chic-Choc mountains. The region is renowned for its seafood, particularly trout and Atlantic salmon, best enjoyed in the attractive fishing towns of Gaspé and Percé.
