The clear waters of Lake Saint Jean flow through the awe-inspiring Saguenay Fjord, offering a myriad of adventures amid stunning scenery – and a feast of blueberries.
The biggest draw of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is the spectacular Saguenay Fjord, which stretches over 100km. Framed by steep cliffs, the fjord is so deep that whales are attracted to the mouth of the river, offering some of the most accessible whale-watching in Canada. The surrounding national park offers a fantastic range of adventures from kayaking and hiking to ziplining and via ferrata climbing.
The Saguenay River originates in the immense Lake Saint-Jean, the largest inhabited lake in Quebec at 45km long. Here you’ll find a variety of watersports and beaches for swimming in summer.
This region harvests a huge amount of blueberries and locals living along the lake are affectionately known as “les Blueets”, so trying the local jam, pies and chocolates is obligatory.
A cultural highlight of the region is Musée Ilnu de Mashteuiatsh with exhibitions on the Pekuakamiulnuatsh, the only Aboriginal community in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region.
Saguenay itself is a pleasant town with some interesting museums, in particular Musée La Pulperie de Chicoutimi on the site of the old pulp mill. The nearby ghost town of Val Jalbert is also worth visiting for an idea of what the region was like a century ago, and can be combined with a trip to Ouiatchouan waterfall on the edge of town.
