Mount Rainier National Park

A year-round recreational paradise, Mount Rainier National Park is a 368 square mile nature preserve that holds one of the USA’s most beguiling mountains and its breathtaking alpine environs. Soaring nearly three miles high, the park’s titular mountain is capped by 26 glaciers and is the tallest free-standing volcano in the contiguous United States. Immense and majestic, it can be seen on the horizon from Seattle, and is endearingly referred to as “The Mountain” by locals.

Surrounded by old-growth forests, gushing waterfalls, turquoise lakes and wildflower-carpeted meadows, Mount Rainier is a must for nature-enthusiasts as outdoor opportunities abound. Boasting more than 260 miles of well-maintained trails, visitors will find everything from short family friendly paths to strenuous hikes leading to a portion of the famous Pacific Crest Trail. Those looking to go deep into the wilderness will enjoy the popular 93-mile Wonderland Trail that encircles the mountain and offers 18 trailside camps to sleep under the stars. For the adventurous, Mount Rainier also draws thousands of climbers each year who hope to scale the volcano, with its 20 climbing routes. Come winter, the park is equally alive thanks to its abundant snowfall which draws crowds for snowshoeing, skiing and snowboarding.
