View Holidays

An area of outstanding scenic beauty, Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood are neighbouring natural wonders that offer outdoor activities in every season. Situated just an hour from downtown Portland, the Columbia River Gorge is a nature preserve centred around an iconic 70-mile, 4,000 ft deep canyon along the Columbia River, and is also home to the highest concentration of waterfalls is the USA – the greatest being the 635-foot Multnomah Falls. For more scenic viewpoints drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway or get out of the car to walk or bike the nine-mile Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail to experience the wilderness up close.

Next, head towards Mount Hood, the 4th highest peak of the Cascade Mountains that towers over the Hood River Valley at 11,239 ft, this alpine volcano is the USA’s only year-round ski destination and provides excellent terrain for skiing and snowboarding. At its base lies the historic town of Hood River that plays host to an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops, galleries and a friendly community. The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts – go mountain biking along the many trails in the Post Canyon Trail System or windsurfing in the cool, clear waves of the Columbia River; hike the countless forest paths or, for serious backpackers, cross from Mount Hood onto the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail; go paddleboarding on Trillium Lake or watch the sun set and reflect Mount Hood in its shimmering waters. A drive along the Mount Hood Scenic Byway is also a must for those who want to experience its full glacial majesty.

The area also boasts a bountiful fruit industry which can be enjoyed from the scenic 35-mile drive known as the Hood River County Fruit Loop. Taking you through the valley’s orchards, forests, farm stands, cider makers and vintners, who work all year long to bring a taste of the Hood River Valley to visitors from around the world, it’s a sweet finish to an even sweeter stay.
