On the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula on Lake Huron, the charming town of Tobermory is famous as the site of over 20 shipwrecks, and makes a great stopover en route to Manitoulin Island.

The shipwrecks can be most easily viewed through incredibly clear water on a glass-bottomed boat tour, while for the more adventurous the region is also known as the scuba diving capital of the Great Lakes. It’s worth a short trip outside town to admire the views from 19th century Big Tub Lighthouse, built to reduce the regular shipwrecks.

Fathom Five Marine Park just outside Tobermory has beautiful shoreline scenery, notably the unique rock formations that give Flowerpot Island its name. Another area to explore nearby is Bruce Peninsula National Park with great beaches, kayaking and hiking to the Grotto, a natural cave. Here you can also hike along the Niagara Escarpment on parts of the famous 782-km Bruce Trail.
