The cliffs, lakes and forested hills of Killarney Provincial Park recall the wilds of its namesake in Ireland. This beautiful area has inspired generations of Canadian painters – so much so that they formed a group to successfully petition the government to create the park in the 1960s to conserve its natural beauty.
Stretching from pink granite cliffs on the northern shore of Lake Huron inland to La Cloche Mountains, the park contains over 50 lakes, including George Lake where camping is permitted. The lakes and tributaries offer great kayaking, while hikers can explore the 80km Cloche-Silhouette Trail or scale Silver Peak, the park’s highest point for spectacular views. The park is home to more than 100 species of birds as well as deer, bears and moose.
It’s worth stopping off to eat in the sheltered harbour of the village of Killarney just outside the park on Georgian Bay.
