Explore Canada

Over 40 times the size of Britain, Canada is a country whose boundless beauty can be overwhelming. While some 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the US border in diverse cities such as Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, the vast landscapes beyond contain Canada’s true wonders – mountains, forests, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes and fjords that are home to an amazing array of wildlife from polar bears, grizzlies, wolves and moose to beluga whales, orcas and humpbacks.

On Canada’s Pacific coast, explore the wild beauty of British Columbia - from the multicultural city of Vancouver to the bear lodges of Vancouver Island and six million hectares of the Great Bear Rainforest, home to the iconic white Spirit Bear.

Alberta is famous for the Rocky Mountains, emerald lakes and boreal forests filled with elk, bears and big-horned sheep. Enjoy the stunning location of Canada’s highest town Banff, the shining turquoise waters of Lake Louise, and the glaciers of Icefields Parkway that offer one of the world’s best drives.

Ontario is most visited for the wondrous Niagara Falls, but don’t miss the ice wine of nearby historic town Niagara-on-the-Lake, the waterfront and iconic tower of Canada’s biggest city Toronto, as well as the stunning archipelago Thousand Islands.

Canada’s largest province Quebec offers French-Canadian gourmet gastronomy in Montreal, colonial grandeur in Quebec City and stunning scenery such as the Saguenay Fjord, which flows to the mouth of the St Lawrence River where pods of whales gather.

Canada’s Maritimes are where the nation was born, serving up some of the best seafood in the world as well as fascinating historic and natural attractions across three Maritime provinces – from the highest tides in the world in the Bay of Fundy to a dozen species of whales breaching from the Atlantic off Nova Scotia.

Remote and rugged Newfoundland offers the unique opportunity to watch ancient icebergs floating past its coast, and stunning wildernesses for hiking and boating such as Gros Morne National Park.

Some 40% of Canada lies within the Arctic Circle and incredible sights await those intrepid enough to venture this far north. The Northern Lights are at their most spectacular in this northern wilderness, while the Midnight Sun offers a stunning contrast in summer. The town of Churchill in Manitoba is one of the best places in the world to see polar bears in autumn and beluga whales in summer, while the Yukon is home to Canada’s highest mountains, largest icefields and thriving indigenous communities.

Where to go when - our guide to Canada

Canada has long winters of up to six months (and longer in the far north) while spring, summer and autumn tend to last about two months each. The best time to visit Canada is May to September when the weather is warmest and sunniest. This is the most comfortable period for outdoor activities and the best time to watch wildlife such as bears and whales. Sunshine and daylight peak in summer (June-August) with very long days and this is also the busiest period for events.

Winter (November-March) is longer and colder further north and inland, but comparatively mild on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts near the US border. This is the best period for winter sports with often heavy snowfall, as well as a great time to watch the Northern Lights.

Spring arrives between March and late April and is a good time to see spring blossoms and waterfalls. Autumn (September-October) sees temperatures fall steadily, but the countryside is often at its most beautiful when the Fall colours arrive.
