St John’s has a rich historic heritage and offers amazing opportunities to spot icebergs and whales off the Newfoundland coast.
The capital of Newfoundland is one of the oldest cities in North America. St John’s (not to be confused with Saint John in New Brunswick) is famous for its colourful ‘jellybean’ row houses and attractive harbour backed by steep hills.
The biggest draw to the city is undoubtedly embarking on unforgettable cruises to spot the world’s largest population of humpback whales, and huge 10,000-year-old icebergs floating by. Nearby Witless Bay is one of the best places to go watch whales and birds with a huge population of Atlantic puffins.
One of the most famous nearby sites is Signal Hill where the first transatlantic radio signal was received and the iconic Cabot Tower, which commemorates explorer John Cabot’s voyage to Newfoundland in 1497. Nearby Cape Spear is the most easterly point in North America with the oldest standing lighthouse.
Historical highlights of St John’s include the bluestone and granite Basilica Cathedral and The Rooms, an art gallery and museum built on an 18th century fort.
The city claims to have the most pubs per square mile in North America and is renowned for its breweries as well as some great seafood restaurants.
