Fogo and Change Islands

At the heart of Iceberg Alley, Fogo Island has dramatic scenery and one of the world’s most unique hotels.

Fogo Island’s welcoming fishing community has become a haven for artists from around the world. The island is famous for the Nordic-style Fogo Island Inn, perched partially on stilts on the edge of the ocean, one of the world’s most unique hotels.

Between mid-May and June, you can enjoy the amazing sight of icebergs floating past Fogo Island, carried south along Iceberg Alley from Greenland by the powerful Labrador Current.

Some of the island’s historical attractions include Fogo Island Marine Interpretation Centre, Bleak House Museum and Marconi Wireless Interpretation Centre, where you can learn about the early communications history of Fogo Island.

Recommended hikes include the Lion’s Den Hiking Trail and the trail past caribou herds to Brimstone Head, believed by flat-earthers to be one of the four corners of the Earth.

Nearby Change Island has a friendly community, historic buildings and a rich fishing culture. The island is home to the Newfoundland Pony Refuge, a sanctuary protecting the critically endangered Newfoundland Pony breed. Other sights include the Olde Shoppe Museum, which displays a variety of local artifacts from the early 19th and 20th century and the Change Islands Interpretation Centre with a geology exhibition and craft shop selling local wares.
