The Berkshires

The Berkshires in Western Massachusetts have gorgeous scenery of hills, forests and lakes surrounding towns filled with a treasure trove of culture – from art galleries to graceful mansions and open-air performances.

The Berkshires may be only two hours west of Boston, but these rolling hills are a different world to the coast with quiet, elegant towns that burst with creative energy each summer.

The Berkshires are brimming with art galleries, notably the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown and Mass MoCa (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) in North Adams, one of the USA’s largest art centres housed in 25 buildings.

On the edge of Stockbridge, the country estate of Naumkeag has a stunning collection of gardens, a Gilded Age mansion and views of Monument Mountain. The nearby Norman Rockwell Museum has a large collection of his artwork as well as his original studio.

The countryside of the Berkshires is ideal for hiking and cycling. A popular route is the 12-mile Ashuwillticook Rail Trail along a disused railway track through Cheshire, Lainsborough and Adams. Another hike is to Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts set in a 12,000-acre reservation, while Bash Bish Falls are the state’s most beautiful waterfalls.

Discover the history of the Shakers at Hancock Shaker Village, which has 20 buildings including the impressive roundstone barn and working farm on the site of a former commune active until the 1960's.

A cultural highlight in summer is the programme of open-air concerts and performances – from the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood to dance at Jacob’s Pillow and theatre in Williamstown.
