The coastline north of Boston towards New Hampshire and Maine is lined with historic harbour towns and sandy beaches perfect for leisurely exploring.
Start with one of the most infamous towns: Salem, site of the 1692 witch trials. The Salem Witch Museum is the best of the town’s cluster of museums to discover its troubling history, and visitors will find the presentations and re-enactments not for the faint of heart. Other highlights of Salem include the Satanic Temple and the Witch House, thought to be haunted by the ghosts of those executed. Salem is particularly interesting to visit in October for the month-long celebration of Halloween, one of the biggest in the world.
Further north lies Gloucester, the USA’s oldest seaport, rich in maritime history and surrounded by great beaches and towering lighthouses such as Eastern Point. Highlights of the town include Hammond Castle Museum and the iconic Man at the Wheel statue, memorialising fishermen lost at sea. Visitors can sail on an original schooner in the harbour, or take a whale-watching trip in summer.
At the northern tip of Cape Ann is the last of the harbour towns, Rockport with its idyllic historic streets. Head to the peninsula of Bearskin Neck, where the iconic red fisherman’s shack Motif no.1 is one of America’s most painted buildings.
