The Lakes of New Hampshire are havens for boating, kayaking and hiking through some of the most beautiful scenery in New England.
New Englanders have been flocking to the serene waterways of the Lakes in New Hampshire for centuries to relax on beaches and take leisurely boating trips. Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest in the region, covering 72 square miles with over 250 islands, offering endless opportunities for cruises, kayaking and paddleboarding in wonderful surroundings.
Wolfboro, the biggest town on Lake Winnipesaukee, claims to be the oldest summer resort in America with a range of restaurants and museums including New Hampshire Boat Museum. One of the best beaches on the lake is Weirs Beach in nearby Laconia on Meredith Bay.
The Squam Lakes, made famous by the movie On Golden Pond, are equally beautiful for a cruise, and Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has hiking trails and rescued animals including bears, mountain lions and otters.
Other highlights of the Lakes region include the Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, a stone mansion dating from 1914 with miles of hiking trails on a 5000-acre estate. The Winnipesaukee River Trail from Franklin to Tilton and Northfield is a popular five-mile route for hikers and cyclists past bridges and mill ruins.
