Day 1 From New York to Connecticut
Pick up your motorhome from Cruise America in Newark and drive around Long Island Sound, then head northeast towards your overnight campground at Hidden Acres.
An optional stop-off is a visit to the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport.
· 260km to Preston
Day 2 Naval history in Mystic and Gilded Age Newport
Drive down the scenic eastern shore of the Thames to visit Mystic Seaport. This once great whaling port and shipyard is a fascinating living outdoor museum with old ships and examples of New England life 200 years ago. Then visit Newport, Rhode Island, where the massive summer mansions of the Vanderbilts and others were the setting for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
· 200km to Scusset Beach State Reservation in Sandwich
Day 3 Pilgrimage to historic Plymouth
Visit the Kennedy family’s home town of Hyannis and the John F. Kennedy Museum, before heading north again to Plymouth Massachusetts. This is where the Mayflower landed the Pilgrims in 1620. Be sure to visit Plimoth Plantation, a recreation of a 1627 village and way of life. Visit Plymouth Rock where the Pilgrims first set foot on the continent.
To explore the historic city of Boston, extend your stay at this campground and use the convenient MBTA commuter rail service in and out of the city. Alternatively, you may want to start this itinerary in Boston by collecting your RV from one of our Boston locations. Stay at Pinewood Lodge Campground.
· 90km to Plymouth
Day 4 Lexington war history and Salem witch trials
Heading north of Boston, stop at Lexington where the first skirmish started the Revolutionary War and where Sam Adams and John Hancock were awakened by Paul Revere on the most famous of his rides. Another fascinating stop is North Salem, New Hampshire, the site of America’s 4,000 year old Stonehenge. Don’t miss the town of Salem itself, the site of the infamous witchcraft trials in 1692. Stay at Beach Rose RV Park.
· 230km to Salisbury Beach
Day 5 Maine seascapes at Acadia National Park
Today, your itinerary brings you to Maine and the dramatic Atlantic coast. Arrive in Bar Harbor on Mt Desert Island, surrounded by the cliffs and seascapes of Acadia National Park. Visit Abbe Museum at Sieur de Monts Spring and take the ferry to Little Cranberry Island.
· 380km to Bar Harbor
Day 6 Maine interior and Mount Blue State Park wildlife
Head inland to Maine capital Bangor and then further into the state’s picturesque interior. Your destination is the Mount Blue State Park and campground. Moose live here, as well as red squirrels, the more elusive black bear and coyotes. Visit Webb Beach and nearby Center Hill.
· 260km to Mount Blue State Park
Day 7 Mount Washington and White Mountain National Forest
As you cross back into New Hampshire, the mountains get higher with Mount Washington at 1,900m dominating the dramatic scenery. Drive further into the White Mountain National Forest, and visit the summit of Mount Washington on the 1869 coal-fired cog railway. Fine French dining can be found in pretty Bethlehem. We recommend an overnight stop at the Beech Hill Campground near Bethlehem.
· 160km to Bethlehem
Day 8 Beautiful countryside of Vermont
Cross into Vermont to the year-round resort surrounding Killington Peak. Visit world-famous Dartmouth College on your way to Hanover and admire the amazing colours if visiting in autumn. Opt for one of the campsites in one of the state parks such as Gifford Woods or Ricker Pond State Park.
· 200km to the Gifford Woods State Park
Day 9 Arlington and the Norman Rockwell Exhibition
Norman Rockwell in many ways embodied the golden age of Americana, and many of his works of art were painted at home in Arlington, Vermont. His home is now The Inn on Covered Bridge Green, so we highly recommend visiting the Norman Rockwell Exhibition.
