Boston

Boston is one of America’s most alluring cities with a stunning harbour, fascinating Revolutionary War sites, some of the country’s finest museums, top-class cuisine and unforgettable whale-watching.

View Holidays

Known as America’s Walking City, Boston is very compact with only 650,000 residents, so it’s a joy to explore the city’s historic sites on foot. The famous Freedom Trail begins at Boston Common, taking in over a dozen sites including the grand Massachusetts State House, the site of the Boston Massacre, legendary patriot Paul Revere’s house, and the USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship, afloat since 1797.

Boston has a range of fascinating museums – the Kennedy Library and Museum honouring one of the city’s most famous sons, the impressionist paintings of the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of African American History, and Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, commemorating the famous protest that sparked the Revolutionary War.

Outside the city centre, cross the Charles River to Cambridge and visit revered seats of learning at Harvard University and the Great Dome of MIT, before enjoying street performances in Harvard Square.

Boston has excellent, wide-ranging cuisine, famous for its lobster rolls and clam chowder. The city’s North End is one of the best districts to eat, and as well as seafood, a large Italian population cooks up the city’s best pizza and pasta.

Boston is one of the only cities in the USA where it’s possible to take whale-watching tours to see humpbacks and other species breaching out of Atlantic waters, and this is often the highlight of a trip to the region. There are many other excellent day trips from Boston, with distances between New England destinations relatively small by US standards. Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard are easily explored, as well as the towns of Lexington and Concord where the Revolutionary War began, and Salem, site of the infamous witch trials.
