The Mint Julep Cocktail first appeared in print in America in 1803, when it was said that the good people of Virginia started each day with one due to its health benefits. Nowadays, the drink is best known for its connection with Louisville and the Kentucky Derby, having become the horse race’s signature drink in 1939.

INGREDIENTS
- 65ml bourbon
- 10 mint leaves
- 12.5ml 2:1 sugar syrup
- Crushed ice
- Garnish: sprig of mint
INSTRUCTIONS
- To make the 2:1 sugar syrup, dissolve 200g sugar in 100ml water over a low heat and then leave to cool
- In a Julep cup or rock glass, lightly muddle the mint leaves in the sugar syrup
- Add the bourbon then pack the glass tightly with crushed ice
- Stir until the cup is frosted on the outside
- Top with more crushed ice to form an ice dome, and garnish with a mint sprig
