Salt Lake City

Nestled at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, next to the exotic waters of the Great Salt Lake, Utah’s metropolitan capital is a hidden gem with excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation.

A thriving city surrounded by natural wonders, Salt Lake City is a surprising destination with an unconventional past. Renowned first and foremost for its access to outdoor adventure, it is the perfect base for exploring Utah’s incredible natural wonders. The state’s five, world-famous national parks are within a couple hours’ drive, and the local natural offerings are just as impressive. Salt Lake City is home to the West’s largest botanical garden, Red Butte Garden, and the Tracy Aviary, where you’ll find some of the USA’s most insightful bird watching. Outside of the city you’re just a short drive away from the wild Wasatch Mountains where stunning locations like Big Cottonwood Canyon await. You’re also right next to one of the world’s most famous saltwater lakes, Great Salt Lake, and just an hour and a half’s drive to the otherworldly plains of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Inside the city proper, the urban landscape has much to offer as well. You’ll find an excellent culinary scene with restaurants to suit all tastes, and the Natural History Museum of Utah which houses world-class exhibitions and delves into the science behind Utah’s remarkable landscapes. Salt Lake City also has some of the most unique examples of architecture in the West – from the striking State Capitol and Salt Lake City Public Library to the iconic Temple Square of the Latter Day Saints and the Tabernacle, home to the world-famous Tabernacle Choir – there’s an impressive range of buildings to see and explore. And getting around is easy. The streets are easy to navigate with much of the city pedestrian-friendly, and a wallet-friendly public transport system.

And not forgetting Salt Lake’s Wild West history – the valley was settled in 1847 by Mormon pioneers who crossed the country against many obstacles, in the hopes of freely practicing their religion. Visitors can learn about the city’s history at Temple Square, as well as see the city’s ongoing dialogue between the modern-day Mormons and the city’s secular citizens who now make up the majority of the population. Salt Lake City is also LGBTQ+ friendly and hosts a wonderful Pride event every June.
