Albuquerque

Southwestern culture and outdoor adventures await in New Mexico’s sprawling high desert city.

View Holidays

Set against the pink hues of the Sandia Mountains and divided by the mighty Rio Grande River, Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city and an enticing mix of Southwestern culture – old and new.

Founded in 1706 by the Spanish, Albuquerque’s well-preserved Old Town is the historical and cultural heart of the city, lined with picturesque Pueblo-style buildings, known for their adobe walls, flat roofs and small arches. Sit back in the town square, marvel at the architecture of the city’s oldest church, San Felipe de Neri, and browse the more than 100 locally-owned shops and galleries where you can buy authentic Southwestern art, pottering and weavings (often at better prices than anywhere else in the Southwest).
Next door is Albuquerque’s modern Downtown where you’ll find fascinating museums and technological heritage – Microsoft was founded here in 1975 and the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History details the state’s role in the nuclear arms race. From the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and the Explora Science Center to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center – the exhibits are well worth one’s time.

For those looking for natural attractions, Albuquerque has plenty to offer too. Catch scenic views of both the city and the incredible high desert landscape with a trip up the Sandia Peak Tramway, or head to Petroglyph National Monument, an archaeological site showcasing thousands of prehistoric Native American drawings. Wildlife lovers will find plenty to see at the ABQ BioPark Zoo, and visitors who arrive via the famous Route 66 will want to head down Central Avenue to marvel at the vintage signs adorning the storefronts.
