Nicknamed Brew City, there is far more to Milwaukee than beer – fascinating museums, unique architecture and famous festivals.
Situated on the southwest shore of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin, Milwaukee is an under-rated Midwestern city with some top-class museums, striking buildings and the world’s largest music festival.
Milwaukee Art Museum is a highlight of the city with nearly 25,000 works of European and American art on a 24-acre lakeside campus. The building itself, known as the Calatrava after its architect, is an award-winning work of art with ‘wings’ that fold out. The Harley Davidson Museum is another must-see, documenting the history of the iconic company with more than 400 motorbikes on display.
Milwaukee is home to the Miller Brewing Company and brewery tours are highly recommended as visitors even get to see the caves used to store beer before refrigeration. The local baseball team are named Milwaukee Brewers and it’s fun to catch a game at the American Family Field stadium with its fan-shaped retractable roof.
Other highlights of the city include the Renaissance-style Pabst Mansion, dating from the 1890's Gilded Age. Formerly home to a beer baron, this is one of the city’s most impressive buildings, with opulent fireplaces and rooms across three floors. The Domes of Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory are another popular attraction with three huge domes containing different eco-systems from desert oasis to tropical jungle and floral garden.
