Lake Superior is so vast that it looks more like a sea than a lake, boasting spectacular islands and rugged rocky shores lined with lighthouses and beautiful beaches.
Nicknamed the Freshwater Sea, Lake Superior is the biggest of the Great Lakes and the largest freshwater lake in the world with the US-Canadian border stretching across its centre.
Marquette on Lake Superior’s southern shore is one of the region’s most beautiful towns and a great base for exploring. The town has six lighthouses and nine waterfalls in its vicinity, as well as abundant wildlife with hundreds of bird species, deer and moose.
In Marquette itself, Presque Isle Park is a forested peninsular extending into Lake Superior, while just outside town Sugarloaf Mountain commands fantastic views from its 150-metre summit. Other popular excursions include the trails, beaches and waterfalls of Pictured Rocks to the east, and Big Bay Point Lighthouse north-west of town.
On the western shore, another highlight of Lake Superior is Minnesota’s North Shore Scenic Drive through spectacular landscapes from Duluth to the Canadian border at Grand Portage. Pattison State Park is one of the most impressive in the region with Big Manitou Falls the highest waterfall in Wisconsin. Of Lake Superior’s islands, Isle Royale Park is a highlight with abundant wildlife and a remote, peaceful location.
