The Overseas Highway is one of America’s greatest drives, spanning 113 miles across 42 bridges through the Florida Keys, an archipelago of coral islands between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. The literal end of the road is island city Key West, famous for its spectacular sunsets, gingerbread mansions, colourful conch houses, Bohemian community and often raucous nightlife.
Key Largo is where the Florida Keys begin and one of the world’s best diving destinations. Highlights include the wreck of the USS Spiegel Grove and diverse marine life including dolphins, manatees and turtles. Snorkelling and kayaking is highly recommended in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
One of the most famous bridges in the Florida Keys is the incredible Seven Mile Bridge at Knight’s Key – two bridges running parallel, one for cars and the other for cyclists and pedestrians.
Key West is the southernmost point in the USA and a photograph of the iconic buoy is obligatory. After dark, Key West really comes alive – begin with the nightly fun-packed Sunset Celebration in Mallory Square then hit the bars and clubs along Duval Street.
Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West for several years and his impressive former home is now a museum with a large population of six-toed cats, some of which are descendants of the author’s pet. Hemingway’s favourite bar Sloppy Joe’s is a popular spot for a drink.
Key West is famous for its seafood, Caribbean specialities and of course trying the iconic Key Lime Pie is a must. A great excursion from Key West is Dry Tortugas National Park, excellent for snorkelling and site of the vast Fort Jefferson, a former Civil War prison.
