West Coast of Florida
The Gulf coast of Florida offers a more laidback vibe than the east coast with white-sand beaches, warmer waters and beautiful resorts – from Naples to Sanibel, Anna Maria Island, St Petersburg and Clearwater.
The west coast of Florida is a different world to the east with calmer, warmer Gulf waters, quieter beaches and resorts that maintain their authentic architecture. The resort of Naples is renowned for its white-sand beaches, galleries, museums and harbour boardwalks. This city is also an alternative base to explore the nearby Everglades.
Sanibel and Captiva are famous for sea shells found on their white-sand beaches. These twin islands are relatively undeveloped due to strict controls, ideal for exploring on foot or by bike. Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge is a highlight of Sanibel Island with over 240 species of birds.
Further north, Anna Maria Island also has stunning white-sand beaches and shuns high rise buildings in favour of old-fashioned Floridian style. Kayaking and fishing are popular, on charters or from the town’s three piers. Manatees and dolphins can be spotted offshore, while May to July is turtle nesting season with hundreds arriving on the beaches.
On Tampa Bay, the resort of St Petersburg is renowned for its Salvador Dali Museum with an unparalleled collection of the great surrealist’s works. The building itself is a wonder to behold with a new immersive experience dome. Nearby Fort de Soto Park has some of the best, unspoilt beaches in the region across five islands on the edge of the bay.
Clearwater is another popular resort in the Tampa area with a walkable downtown, waterfront parks and famous white-sand beach. Caladesi Island State Park and Honeymoon Island State Park are the best places for quieter, pristine stretches of sand.
