When arriving in Miami, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Latin America and to an extent you are – over two-thirds of the Magic City’s citizens are Latino.
With streets lined with palm trees, idyllic beaches and Cuban flavours, Miami is very much a tropical city with a hot climate and hot-blooded locals who know how to party. While the beaches and nightlife are the biggest draws for many visitors, there’s a lot more to the city.
To fully immerse yourself in Miami’s Latin heritage, head to Calle Ocho in Little Havana for Cuban art, shopping and sumptuous food and drink. The music festival held here every March is the USA’s biggest Latino celebration.
Miami Beach has been one of the USA’s most famous resorts for a century, renowned for its nine-mile promenade, Art Deco buildings and pulsating South Beach nightlife. Cultural highlights include the former Versace mansion Casa Casuarina, the extraordinary Holocaust Memorial, and the Art Deco district centred around Ocean Drive.
In Downtown Miami, head to the shops and restaurants of Bayside Marketplace, then enjoy a walk through Bayfront Park or a sunset cruise around the bay. Art lovers should visit the Wynwood district, famous for dozens of murals at Wynwood Walls and the Museum of Graffiti. On hot days, cool down in the city’s largest shopping centre Dolphin Mall.
One of the highlights of the Coconut Grove district south of Downtown is Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, a stunning century-old Renaissance-style property in 10 acres of landscaped gardens overlooking Biscayne Bay.
