Philadelphia is where the USA was born, a city filled with iconic historic sites of the nation’s independence, and a great place to shop and eat.
A city proud of its status as the birthplace of the United States, Philadelphia is where the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall on July 4th, 1776.
Philadelphia means City of Brotherly Love in ancient Greek, and it’s a friendly place filled with important historic sites. Foremost is Independence Hall with the Assembly Room arranged as it was at the time of the signing of the Declaration, complete with George Washington’s Rising Sun Chair. The surrounding Independence National Historic Park is renowned as the most historic square mile in the country with colonial buildings including Congress Hall and Old City Hall, museums, churches and cobbled streets.
The iconic Liberty Bell, the original city bell, can be found across the street from Independence Hall. Displaying its distinctive crack, the bell was commissioned in 1752 with the inscription: “Proclaim Liberty throughout the land”.
Other highlights around the city include the Museum of the American Revolution, the African American Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art with its vast collection of Renaissance, Impressionist and American art, as well as a Sculpture Garden. The steps up to the Museum of Art were immortalised in the film Rocky, and are now graced by the Rocky Statue.
When it comes to dining, Philadelphia is a fantastic city for food, especially Italian-American specialties. As well as the famous Philly Cheesesteak, the city’s culinary delights include hoagies, roast pork sandwiches, soft pretzels, tomato pie and red gravy pasta.
Philadelphia is also known as America’s Garden Capital for its more than 30 stunning gardens, and a haven for shopping for tax-free goods. Don't miss out on either.
