New York is one of the greatest, most visited cities in the world and in many ways epitomises the USA – a bold, grandiose, multi-cultural city that never sleeps.
Whether it’s your first time or umpteenth, there’s something uniquely alluring about being a part of it in New York , as the Sinatra song muses. New York City’s iconic sites are innumerable – from the majesty of the Empire State Building to the greenery of Central Park, the elegant Statue of Liberty, the bright lights of Times Square, the theatres of Broadway and the engineering feat of Brooklyn Bridge.
While the classic sights are unforgettable, New York has many other attractions. As well as Liberty Island, it’s fascinating to explore Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. Instead of the overcrowded Empire State, appreciate better views from the Rockefeller Center’s Top of the Rock or One World Trade Center, built on the site of the Twin Towers, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum at ground level.
New York’s newest neighbourhood is Hudson Yards, Manhattan’s West Side with 14 acres of plazas, gardens, shops, restaurants and culture. The district’s centrepiece is the Vessel, consisting of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs. Don’t miss walking the High Line, a regenerated 1.5-mile walkway 10 metres above street level, and the spectacular but vertigo-inducing 100th floor Edge Sky Deck, the highest outdoor observation deck in the western hemisphere.
From New York pizza to cheesecake, hot dogs and pastrami sandwiches, the city’s food is world-famous, but there’s far more to enjoy than just fast food. New York has some of the best restaurants in the world and astonishingly multi-cultural dining – from Chinatown and Koreatown to Harlem Soul Food and East Village gourmet.
