Lancaster County is home of the oldest and largest Amish community in the USA, known for their traditional way of life and avoidance of modern technology.

Migrating to Pennsylvania in the early 18th century, the Amish still preserve their simple lifestyle, avoiding cars, phones and television. The region is popularly but somewhat erroneously known as Dutch country because the Amish are in fact originally Swiss German.

This is a county of horses and buggies, windmills, traditional farming and hand-made goods. The best way to explore is on a self-guided walking tour, beginning at the Discover Lancaster History Museum, which features 32 life-size exhibits charting 400 years of history.

The heart of the city is Central Market, the country’s oldest continuously operating farmers’ market with shops, galleries and restaurants in an impressive terracotta building dating from the late 19th century.

Other highlights of the region include The Amish Farm and House, which depicts the traditional way of life in a farmhouse, schoolhouse and farm, and the People’s Place, which has an overview of the communities with local artwork, and Quilt Museum opposite with a wide selection of crafts.
