New Yorkers have been decamping to the Hamptons, a cluster of beach-side communities on the southeast coast of Long Island, for years, and you should too.
Around 150 km east of New York City, just two hours by car, the biggest draw of the Hamptons is sunbathing, surfing and people-watching on the beaches - try Cooper’s in Southampton, Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett and Main Beach in East Hampton. While you're there, make sure to also browse the boutiques and galleries, sample the wineries and feast on fresh seafood in the restaurants.
Beyond the beach, highlights of the region include Montauk Point State Park on the most easterly tip of New York State, The Lighthouse which was commissioned in 1792 by George Washington, the Sah Harbour Whaling Museum which charts the region’s maritime history, Hither Hills State Park for excellent hiking along woodland trails and peaceful dunes in Napeague Harbor.
