Finger Lakes
The Finger Lakes in north-western New York State contain spellbinding scenery of gorges, forests, vineyards and roaring waterfalls that rival Niagara.
This region of long finger-shaped lakes between Lake Ontario and the Pennsylvania border is famous for its breathtaking scenery, some 150 towering waterfalls and charming wine trails.
Cayuga is the longest of 11 lakes and the beautiful town of Ithaca overlooks its southern shore. The surrounding countryside is filled with vineyards, renowned for the Cayuga Wine Trail, and dozens of waterfalls include the towering Taughannock, which is higher than Niagara.
State parks include the spellbinding Watkins Glen where a stream descends 400 feet past dramatic cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls with paths winding over and under them. Letchworth State Park is equally breathtaking with Lower, Middle and Upper Falls tumbling over cliffs on the Genesee River and 66 miles of surrounding hiking trails. Buttermilk Falls is a more serene spot with a pool popular for swimming at its base.
The Finger Lakes are renowned for vineyards with wine trails along lakes including Canandagua, Cayuga and Senega, as well as a range of farm-to-table food served in local restaurants. The region has several wine and grape festivals, and trying the local grape pie is a must.
Cultural highlights of the region include Corning Museum of Glass, the world’s largest collection of glass art with more than 50,000 objects, and It’s a Wonderful Life Museum at Seneca Falls, celebrating the movie thought to be inspired by the town.
