The capital of New York State, Albany has beautiful architecture, rich history and a thriving arts scene.
Albany may be relatively undiscovered compared with Boston, New York and Washington, but the capital of New York State has much to offer with a wealth of historic architecture and a busy cultural scene.
Albany is one of the oldest cities in the USA, dating back to a fort established on the Hudson River in 1614. The historic heart of the city is the stunning Empire State Plaza. The chateau-like New York State Capitol is one of the most beautiful and extravagant in the country, dating from the 1890's with a neo-Gothic façade, Moorish and Romanesque interiors and sweeping staircases.
Empire State Plaza is overlooked by the 180-metre Erastus Corning Tower, and the observation deck on the 42nd floor has fantastic views over the city. Other highlights of the city centre include New York State Museum with exhibitions on natural history, culture and art, while Albany Institute of History & Art is famous for the landscape paintings of the Hudson River School.
The USS Slater, docked on the Albany waterfront, is the only World War II-era destroyer escort still afloat and the only one in existence with its original battle armament. Albany also has many historic houses including the Schuyler Mansion, home to the wife of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
The best place to enjoy the city’s natural surroundings is the 81 acres of Washington Park, which includes English Gardens, a lake and lake house. The park hosts a famous tulip festival in May with over 100,000 flowers. Albany has a busy cultural scene, thriving LGBTQ community and frequently welcomes international artists to its venues The Egg and Palace Theater.
