Natchez
The oldest permanent settlement on the Mississippi River, Natchez was once crowned the jewel of the Mississippi, and is a must on any visit to the Deep South.
Perched upon a natural bluff above the Mississippi, the town of Natchez boasts 30-mile views up and down the river – including some of the very best sunsets you’ll see in the region – and is rich in both architecture and history.
Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Natchez was under both French and Spanish control before becoming a part of America with the establishment of the Mississippi Territory in 1798. Today, the town of Natchez maintains its antebellum air, with over 600 beautiful 18th and 19th century mansions. Many of these historic homes, like The Burn and Longwood are open to the public, and the town’s immaculate gardens open especially for the Spring and Autumn Pilgrimages.
Natchez is also the namesake for the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile trail that stretches from Natchez to Nashville in Tennessee. First traversed by buffalo, then American Indians, European settlers, slave traders and soldiers, the Natchez Trace is an exceptionally scenic route filled with historic sites, picnic areas, biking paths, and camping grounds.
