Renowned for the beauty of its ancient mountains, and its diverse plant and animal life, the Great Smoky Mountains are one of America’s finest examples of remote wilderness. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Smokies straddle the states of North Carolina and Tennessee, but are most accessible from the Tennessee side where small towns like Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville add to the environment with their Southern charm and hospitality.
Take scenic drives and stop at some spectacular spots along the way – fishing and picnicking opportunities are abundant. Spend a night or two in the mountains – you can choose between a hotel, a tent, or a log cabin. The Smokies are a hiker’s paradise with well-maintained trails ranging from short to strenuous treks. Wildlife lovers will be impressed that the mountains are home to one of the densest black bear populations in the United States, over 200 species of birds and the most diverse salamander population outside of the tropics. Even colourblind visitors can get the most out of a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains as colourblind viewfinders are located at every lookout.
