Stretching along 26 miles of scenic shoreline just south of Lake Charles, the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road leads you into the breathtaking splendour of Louisiana’s renowned and unspoiled wetlands, wildlife refuges and rippling marshes. Affectionately known as “Louisiana’s Outback”, you can stay in your car for a short drive-through visit or get out and explore along miles of footpaths to spot alligators, watch birds, go fishing, crabbing and seashell hunting.

Start at Adventure Point in Sulphur to plot your route and get a crash course in the area’s natural wonders and unique culture. Then head out on the trail, the full length of which takes 4 to 6 hours to traverse. You’ll pass pretty lakes and three nationally-recognised protected areas: Sabine National Wildlife Refuge, Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge and Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge. With more than 250 species of birds, as well as a wide range of wildlife from alligators and armadillos to coyotes and river otters, you’ll get to witness indigenous Gulf Coast wildlife in its natural habitat.
