Outer Banks FAQs

Find out all you need to know about visiting Outer Banks.

When is the best time to visit Outer Banks?

North Carolina’s Outer Banks are a year-round destination thanks the area’s humid subtropical climate, where the warmth of spring and summer are tempered by the coast and autumn and winter are warmed by the Gulf Stream. Autumn is generally considered the best time to visit Outer Banks as the weather stays mild until December. Expect great fishing, wind surfing and kiteboarding between September and early December, and daytime highs around 22°C to 25°C. Summer is an equally good time to visit as the weather is pleasantly warm, and the location is ideal for a summer holiday. Spring is when this tranquil stretch of barrier islands comes back to life after the chilly temperatures of winter, with daytime highs between 17°C and 22°C. As of March, all shops, restaurants and outdoor activities reopen for business. Winter brings solitude to the Outer Banks and daytime highs of around 13°C. Although much is shut during these months, the peace you can find in the Outer Banks is second to none.
