The Yukon
The vast northern wilderness of the Yukon is home to Canada’s highest mountains and largest icefields – and one of the best destinations to see the Northern Lights.
Yukon means ‘great river’ in native American and its waterways run famously rich in gold. The smaller of Canada’s three vast northern territories first came to the world’s attention during the Klondike Gold Rush in the 1890's, but for centuries the Yukon was run by First Nations communities, a proud heritage that continues to this day.
In summer, the Yukon’s stunning scenery can be explored on hikes, bike rides and kayaking trips before enjoying the wonder of the Midnight Sun. In winter, the region’s vast expanses and sparse population make it one of the best destinations in North America to see the Northern Lights, as well as enjoying activities such as dog-sledding, snow-shoeing, skiing and ice-fishing.
Perhaps the most spectacular destination in the Yukon is Kluane National Park with ancient glaciers and 17 of Canada’s highest peaks including towering Mount Logan.
The Southern Lakes region of the Yukon contains the Carcross Desert, known as the smallest desert in the world, and Emerald Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in the territory.
Further north, Tombstone Territorial Park is a wilderness of granite peaks, home to bears and wolves, offering great wildlife watching and hiking.
Yukon’s capital Whitehorse and Dawson City are the best places to learn of the region’s mining history with preserved paddle steamers, historic buildings and museums, and you can even have a go at panning for gold in the rivers.
