The Northwest Territories are reassuringly remote and those who venture this far north are rewarded with breathtaking landscapes of lakes, mountains and boreal forests, thriving indigenous cultures, and the clearest skies on the continent to see the Northern Lights.
One of the most accessible areas of Northwest Territories by road is along the 740-km Dempster Highway from Dawson City in the Yukon to Inuvik in the Arctic Circle. Highlights of Inuvik include the iconic Igloo Church and a popular excursion is a boat tour of the labyrinthine MacKenzie Delta.
The capital of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife is also known as the ‘aurora capital of North America’, one of the best locations to see the Northern Lights, visible on 240 nights of the year.
Named after the copper blades used by local Dene people, Yellowknife is also a vibrant destination to visit in summer for its indigenous culture and Midnight Sun. A popular excursion is a float plane trip across Great Slave Lake, the deepest lake in North America.
The Northwest Territories contain six national parks, the most famous of which is Nahanni National Park. Stretching across 30,000 square kilometres, this astonishing wilderness has towering canyons and the awe-inspiring Virginia Falls that rival Niagara, crashing into the Nahanni River. The park has no roads so is best explored by boat or on an epic flightseeing trip from Fort Simpson.
Another highlight of the region is Wood Buffalo National Park in the far south of the territory, stretching into Alberta, with the world’s largest herd of wood bison inhabiting grass and sedge meadows.
